Make simple airplanes and gliders while experimenting with direction of forces on an airplane and discussing various types of aircraft engines (piston, turboprop, jet). Make paper helicopters and figure out how the whirling blades move through the air; compare flight patterns of birds with the design, construction, and aerodynamics of airplanes and gliders and discuss how weather conditions affect flight. Make balloon rockets or build a model of a rocket and explore several launching methods of launching your rocket. While building a mock space satellite, explore the space program and the solar system. Build a model car, read maps; measure distance using a road map and determine how many miles are between two major cities by car. Use a compass and identify North, South, East and West. Become familiar with safety rules for kite flying and make a kite and a windmill, waterwheel or an invention of your own design that shows motion.
